Where to Buy Christmas Tamales in San Antonio

A few dozen for Christmas Eve, a mixed order for visiting family, or one small bag for supper: the right tamale order starts with the filling, the pickup location and how you plan to serve it.

Christmas Eve is Thursday, December 24, 2026. Christmas Day is Friday. Regular weekend tamale service does not establish holiday availability; confirm your collection date when ordering.

San Antonio tamales by the dozen: prices to compare

Start with a plain dozen before comparing bundles. A pack with rice, beans, queso and chips is a different purchase from twelve tamales on their own. The prices below come from published menus; they do not establish Christmas stock or a reserved pickup slot.

Delicious Tamales amounts above are from its West Avenue ordering page. Adelita’s amounts are from the menu image on its official site. “Not listed” means a half-dozen option was not established in the reviewed menu, not that the shop cannot arrange one.

There is a useful small-order difference: two half dozens at La Luz equal its full-dozen price, while two half dozens at La Fonda cost $20 rather than $18. That matters when you want two fillings. Ask whether a mixed dozen is available before assuming the dozen price applies.

Five shops to consider for a Christmas tamale order.

Straightforward half-dozen pricing

La Luz Tortilla Factory

$18 a dozen · $9 for six

Choose pork, chicken or bean. Its regular menu describes tamales as a weekend item, so a Thursday Christmas Eve pickup needs a specific conversation rather than an assumption based on store opening hours.

If you are buying a small order, the half-dozen option makes it easier to avoid an unwanted full bag. Check whether different fillings must be ordered in separate packs.

Delicious Tamales

Selected West Ave dozens: $13.89–$14.72

The branch’s ordering page lists meat, bean, cheese and sweet varieties, with hot or cold choices. Seasonal pumpkin appears on the menu, but confirm stock for your date.

This guide’s quoted branch is West Avenue. The business also lists locations on Culebra, Nacogdoches, Timberhill, Marbach and Sonterra. Select the correct branch before paying; do not assume an order follows you to another counter.

Tamales alone or a larger meal

La Fonda on Main

$18 a dozen · $10 for six

Its ordering page lists pork and jalapeño-cheese selection options with hot or cold pickup. Chicken tomatillo is also mentioned in the item description; check whether it can actually be selected for your order.

The separate $45 Tamale Party Pack adds accompaniments including queso, a choice of rice or beans, guacamole, salsa and chips, plus puntas and chiles. Compare that as a meal bundle rather than a more expensive plain dozen.

Tamales and masa

Adelita Tamales & Tortilla Factory

Published menu: $12.75 a dozen

The menu image lists pork, pork jalapeño, chicken and bean jalapeño. The shop also sells masa, which makes it an option to ask about if some relatives are making tamales while others are buying them.

Decide which task you are taking home: reheating cooked tamales or cooking an uncooked order. Confirm the product you are buying and ask for the instructions that apply to it.

Delia’s

Ask Hausman Pass for your filling’s price

The brand menu includes regular and specialty tamales, including cheese-based and sweet options. Dozen and half-dozen formats are published, but in-restaurant and online prices are separate and prices may vary by location.

Use the San Antonio branch for a local pickup quote. A shipped order is a different purchase with its own timing and charges. For a mixed family order, write the fillings and quantities down before calling.

The Christmas collection plan

When should you order Christmas tamales?

Choose your shop before choosing a last-minute pickup time. A regular menu proves that a business sells tamales; it does not prove that your filling will be available at noon on Christmas Eve.

Firm 2026 Christmas order cutoffs were not established for these shops in this review. Use the steps below as a planning sequence, not as restaurant-announced deadlines.

  1. First, settle the kind of order

Write down your savory fillings, any sweet order, and whether you need the food hot or cold. Decide which dishes other people are bringing so you are not ordering extra tamales to fill a gap that is actually rice, beans or dessert.

  2. Then ask how holiday orders are accepted

Some businesses may use a special process in December. Ask whether a phone conversation reserves anything, whether payment is needed, and what written confirmation you receive.

  3. Match the collection slot to the food

If you intend to collect on December 24, say so explicitly. If you are collecting earlier, ask how the shop recommends storing and reheating the exact product you buy.

  4. Confirm before the pickup trip

Check the branch, order name, quantity, payment status and time. Give those details to the person driving. The right order at the wrong branch is still an extra trip.

Holiday arrangements can differ from ordinary hours. In particular, La Luz’s regular tamale menu is described as weekends only, while Christmas Eve and Christmas Day fall on weekdays in 2026.

Build an order people will actually enjoy

Separate the mild and spicy bags

Ask which flavors are mild rather than judging only by their names. If you buy several kinds, request labels and keep the bags separate through reheating. Put a small note beside each serving dish so guests do not have to open three tamales to find the filling they want.

If someone is avoiding pork, confirm the whole recipe. The filling is only one part of a tamale; the masa and cooking ingredients matter too.

Keep sweet tamales on their own list

Decide whether sweet tamales are dessert or an extra item for later. Otherwise it is easy to count them toward a savory dinner order and discover that fewer main-course portions are available than you intended.

Ask about nuts, dairy and other ingredients for the particular sweet filling. A familiar flavor name is not a complete ingredient list.

Do not treat every tamale as the same size

One dozen means twelve pieces, not a standardized weight. Size, filling and the rest of the meal affect how far an order goes. Ask the shop for portion guidance, then use what you know about your own guests’ appetites.

If you want leftovers, make that a deliberate part of the order. Extra food needs storage space and a plan for the next meal.

Compare plain dozens with plain dozens

Check whether a quoted amount buys only tamales or a bundle with accompaniments. Also distinguish local pickup from shipping and third-party delivery. Different ordering channels can produce different totals even when the shop name is the same.

Before paying, confirm the total for your selected flavors, quantity and collection method—not just the headline starting price.

What to serve with Christmas tamales

Tamales can be the main course without making every other dish complicated. Rice, beans, a fresh salsa and something crisp give guests a few choices while keeping the table manageable.

If you are buying a party pack, list what comes with it before assigning dishes to relatives. There is little reason for three people to bring beans while nobody brings serving utensils or drinks.

A family meal can mix traditions, too. Our Tex-Mex and Mexican food guide explains some of the dishes you may be choosing between. Choose sides your guests enjoy rather than trying to make every part of the menu match a label.

Hot, cold or uncooked: ask before taking the bag

These are different products, even if they all come wrapped in corn husks. Hot tamales are intended for a different timeline from chilled cooked tamales or an uncooked order that still needs steaming.

Ask for written instructions covering your actual order. Avoid copying a heating time from another shop: the starting temperature, size, quantity and equipment can all change the process.

Keep perishable food refrigerated promptly. USDA guidance is to refrigerate within two hours, or one hour when temperatures exceed 90°F, and reheat leftovers to 165°F using a food thermometer. That reheating guidance is for cooked food; an uncooked product needs its maker’s cooking instructions.

When serving several batches, keep the labels with the bags and use clean utensils for each filling. This makes it easier to track which dish is which and to answer guests’ questions accurately.

Christmas tamale ordering questions

Where can I buy tamales by the dozen in San Antonio?

The shops in this guide include La Luz, Delicious Tamales, La Fonda on Main, Adelita and Delia’s. Compare the listed filling and pickup options, then confirm the date directly.

Can I order just half a dozen?

La Luz and La Fonda publish half-dozen prices. Delia’s also publishes half-dozen menu formats, with local pricing to confirm. A missing half-dozen listing elsewhere does not establish that a special order is impossible.

Can I mix flavors in one dozen?

Do not assume so. Ask whether the shop sells mixed dozens, separate half dozens or full dozens by flavor. The price and packaging can differ.

Can I collect on Christmas Eve?

Ask the shop specifically about Thursday, December 24, 2026. Ordinary opening hours and a regular online pickup calendar do not by themselves establish holiday order availability.

Are bean or cheese tamales vegetarian?

The filling name alone is not enough. Ask about the masa, cooking fat, stock and preparation. For allergies or stricter dietary requirements, discuss the exact ingredients and shared equipment with the shop.

Does the guide’s lowest price mean the best value?

Not necessarily. Size, filling, included sides, collection distance and whether your order is confirmed all matter. Compare the same quantity and kind of product before choosing on price.

Should I buy hot or cold tamales?

Choose according to serving time and the shop’s instructions. If you will not eat soon after collection, ask about a chilled option and how to store and reheat it safely.

Where can we eat out instead?

Browse our San Antonio restaurant menus for regular dining choices. For December 25, check the separate Texas Christmas Day restaurant guide rather than assuming a tamale shop is open.
