The short version

  • For the most protein per calorie, nothing beats Chick-fil-A’s 12-count Grilled Nuggets: 38g of protein for 200 calories, a ratio that rivals a scoop of whey.
  • For the most protein in a single order, a Chipotle double-chicken bowl clears 70g, because a bowl lets you stack meat without stacking bread.
  • For the cheapest protein, McDonald’s McDouble delivers about 22g for a value-menu price — roughly 8.8g of protein per dollar, the best in fast food.
  • The pattern behind every top pick is the same: grilled chicken, lean beef and eggs carry the protein; breading, buns and sauce carry the calories.
  • Prices and exact macros vary by location and customization, so the ranking order holds even where a single number shifts by a few grams or cents.

Sort 30 items your way

Most “high protein fast food” lists pick one order and call it a day. Protein density and protein value are different questions with different winners, so this table lets you choose the axis. Filter by category and re-sort by total protein, protein per calorie, or protein per dollar.

Protein-per-calorie is grams of protein per calorie. Protein-per-dollar is grams per dollar at the listed price. Both are calculated from the columns, not advertised by the chains.

The winners, by axis

Three questions, three different answers

“Highest protein” isn’t one question. Whether you want the leanest, the biggest, or the cheapest protein changes which item wins — so here is the top pick for each.

01

Leanest — Chick-fil-A 12-ct Grilled Nuggets

The best protein-per-calorie ratio in fast food. At 19g of protein per 100 calories, it edges out every standard menu item at McDonald’s, Subway, Chipotle and Taco Bell — close to a whey scoop, but actual food.

38g protein
200 cal · $8.49
02

Most protein — Chipotle Double Chicken Bowl

Around 73g in one order. A bowl beats any burger because you can stack meat without stacking bread and cheese — a burger caps out at two or three patties before the bun swamps the macros.

73g protein
~700 cal · $11.90
03

Cheapest — McDonald’s McDouble

About 22g of protein for a value-menu price, roughly 8.8g per dollar — the cheapest gram of protein on this entire list. Order two and you’re at 44g for under five dollars.

22g protein
390 cal · $2.49

Notice these three never overlap. The leanest pick is not the cheapest, the cheapest is not the biggest, and the biggest is not the leanest. Anyone who tells you a single order is “the best high-protein fast food” is answering only one of the three questions.

Leanest of the lean

Best protein-per-calorie fast food options

If you are cutting or just want to spend as few calories as possible on your protein, this is the table to memorize. These are the items where nearly every calorie is doing protein work.

ItemProteinCaloriesPer 100 cal
Chick-fil-A 12-ct Grilled Nuggets38g20019.0g
Popeyes Blackened Tenders, 5 pc43g28015.4g
Chick-fil-A 8-ct Grilled Nuggets25g13019.2g
Taco Bell Chicken Power Bowl (modified)35g25513.7g
Wendy’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich, no bun34g29011.7g
Chick-fil-A Grilled Cool Wrap, no dressing42g35012.0g

The takeaway is structural, not brand-driven: strip the breading and the bun and you are left with lean protein doing almost all the caloric work. A plain grilled chicken breast sits around 15 to 17g of protein per 100 calories, and the grilled nuggets essentially match that because they are exactly that — cut chicken breast with almost nothing else attached. This is the same lesson behind our Whataburger nutrition breakdown: the grilled filet is the lean anchor, and everything you add to it spends calories faster than it adds protein.

A real Texas example

What this looks like at a Texas chain

The national picture is useful, but you order where you live. Two chains we cover in depth show both ends of the protein spectrum.

Whataburger’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich lands at 32g of protein for 430 calories — a genuinely strong lean pick, and one of the highest-protein grilled sandwiches in the group above. Its 3-piece Grilled Chicken Strips push 30g for 410 calories if you want the same protein without the bun. Full numbers, prices and the build-your-own calculator live on our Whataburger menu page.

Fried tenders are a different story. A tender is breaded, so a chunk of every calorie is coating and oil rather than protein — which is why Bush’s Chicken tenders, delicious as they are, sit lower on a protein-per-calorie basis than a grilled filet. If tenders are your order anyway, our Bush’s Chicken menu and Value Ladder shows how to get the most chicken for your money, which is the fried-chicken version of the same optimization this page runs on protein.

Rule of thumb — grilled beats fried for protein density every time. If a menu offers the same cut grilled or breaded, the grilled version gives you more protein for fewer calories, usually by a wide margin.

Value, not just density

High protein take-out options that don’t cost a fortune

Protein per dollar is the axis nobody plans around but everyone feels at the register. Here the cheap beef burgers win outright, because value-menu ground beef is the least expensive complete protein in fast food.

ItemProteinPricePer $
McDonald’s McDouble22g$2.498.8g
McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger25g$3.297.6g
McDonald’s Triple Cheeseburger34g$5.496.2g
Whataburger 3-pc Grilled Strips30g$4.996.0g
Chipotle Double Chicken Bowl73g$11.906.1g
Popeyes Blackened Tenders, 5 pc43g$6.996.2g

The interesting twist: the Chipotle double-chicken bowl, despite being the priciest single item on the whole list, still holds a respectable protein-per-dollar because it delivers so many grams at once. Cheap protein and abundant protein aren’t opposites — but the leanest protein almost always costs more, because you’re paying for chicken breast instead of ground beef.

How we built this

Our method, and its limits

Every protein and calorie figure on this page comes from each chain’s official published nutrition information, cross-checked against major nutrition databases where a chain’s own PDF was ambiguous. We did not estimate a single number to fill a gap. Where an item’s protein depends on how it’s ordered — Chipotle bowls and Subway subs especially — we’ve labeled it as a build rather than presenting a made-up fixed figure, and used the standard high-protein configuration those chains publish.

Three honest limits apply. First, prices are approximate and vary widely by location and franchise; fast-food pricing is among the most location-dependent in retail, so treat the dollar figures as a fair working guide, not a quote. Second, some items — Popeyes Blackened Tenders, the modified Taco Bell Power Bowl — aren’t available or consistent at every location, so call ahead. Third, “highest protein” is genuinely three different questions, which is why this page ranks on three axes instead of crowning one winner. The ranking order is stable even where an individual number shifts.

If a number here ever disagrees with what’s printed in the restaurant, trust the restaurant — recipes and formulations change, and the chain’s current nutrition page is always the final word.

Common questions

High protein fast food FAQ

What is the highest protein fast food item?

By total grams in a single standard order, a Chipotle double-chicken bowl leads at roughly 73g. Among fixed menu items, Wendy’s Baconator (59g) and McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese (51g) are the highest, though both carry high calorie and fat loads. For protein without the calories, Chick-fil-A’s 12-count Grilled Nuggets deliver 38g for just 200 calories.

What has the best protein-per-calorie ratio at a fast food restaurant?

Chick-fil-A’s Grilled Nuggets, at about 19g of protein per 100 calories. That ratio rivals a scoop of whey protein and beats every standard item at McDonald’s, Subway, Chipotle, Taco Bell and Burger King. The 8-count (25g, 130 cal) and 12-count (38g, 200 cal) both hit it.

What is the cheapest high-protein fast food?

McDonald’s McDouble, at roughly 22g of protein for a value-menu price — about 8.8g of protein per dollar, the best value in fast food. Two McDoubles gets you around 44g of protein for under five dollars.

What are the best high protein take-out options for weight loss?

Look for grilled chicken and lean items where protein makes up most of the calories: grilled nuggets, a grilled chicken sandwich with no bun, a Chipotle bowl with double chicken and no rice, or a grilled salad without heavy dressing. The common thread is skipping breading, buns and calorie-dense sauces so the protein does the work.

Is grilled chicken really better than fried for protein?

Yes, on protein density. Breading and frying oil add calories without adding much protein, so a grilled filet gives you more protein per calorie than the same cut breaded and fried — usually by a wide margin. If your goal is protein per calorie, always choose grilled when a chain offers both.

How much protein should a fast food meal have?

Many nutrition frameworks target 25 to 40g of protein per meal for active adults. Most of the top items on this list clear 30g, and several clear 40g, which puts a single fast-food order comfortably in that range if you choose the right item.

Sourcing

Where these numbers come from

  • Official published nutrition information from each chain (Chick-fil-A, Whataburger, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Chipotle, Taco Bell, Popeyes, Subway, In-N-Out), accessed August 2026.
  • Major nutrition databases used only to cross-check official figures where a chain’s own disclosure was ambiguous, never to override it.
  • Prices reflect commonly reported 2026 menu prices and are approximate; fast-food pricing varies by location and franchise.
  • Protein-per-calorie and protein-per-dollar figures are calculated by us from the published protein, calorie and price columns.
