Since 1995

A West Texas rancher’s restaurant, three decades on

Reata began with Al Micallef, owner of the CF Ranch in the Davis Mountains, who partnered with Fort Worth businessman Mike Evans to open the first Reata in Alpine, Texas in 1995 — naming it after the fictional cattle empire in George Stevens’ 1956 film Giant, starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean.

A year later Reata came to Fort Worth, taking the 35th floor of the Bank One Tower. On March 28, 2000, an F3 tornado tore through downtown Fort Worth and devastated the building. Reata reopened in the same tower just 42 days later — the first tornado-damaged business in the city to reopen — but closed again in January 2001 when the building itself couldn’t continue. The restaurant spent the next 22 years at Sundance Square before a lease that wasn’t renewed sent it looking for a new home in 2022. In July 2024, Reata moved back into The Tower — the very building it opened in back in 1996 — this time on the ground floor at 530 Throckmorton Street.

Three things to know before you order

01 — The Starter

Calf fries are the real thing

Calf fries are breaded and fried calf testicles, also called Rocky Mountain oysters. They are an organ-meat starter rather than potatoes or an ordinary beef cut. Reata serves them with cream gravy at $14. If you prefer another starter, compare the crab-stuffed jalapeños or onion rings.

02 — Compare the Cuts

Three ribeye listings, three ways to order

The 20oz Cowboy Bone-In Ribeye is $85. The Blackened Buffalo Ribeye is $67 and uses bison. The separate charbroiled beef ribeye is $3.95 per ounce with a 14oz minimum: at least $55.30, or $79 for 20oz, before extras. Ask about available weights and included accompaniments.

03 — The Finish

Dessert Tacos have been here since Alpine

Crisp sweet shells filled with caramelized bananas and finished with chocolate gravy — Reata’s most iconic dessert, on the menu since the original 1995 location. If you’re deciding whether to save room, save the room.

A smaller lunch, built your way

What can go in the $15 Saddle Pack?

Choose two listed components: a cup of soup, field greens salad, Caesar salad, half club sandwich, one tenderloin tamale or half grilled cheese. The wedge salad option adds $3.

For example, half a grilled cheese plus a cup of soup is $15 before tax and tip. A half club with the wedge option is $18. These are smaller components of the lunch combination, rather than two full entrées.

Dining with six or more? The restaurant’s linked menus list a 20% service gratuity. Six $33 redfish mains total $198 in food plus $39.60 gratuity, or $237.60 before tax, drinks and other items. The planner above shows one person’s food subtotal.

Reata Fort Worth — FAQ

Why is the restaurant called Reata?
Reata is Spanish for “rope,” and it’s named after the fictional cattle ranch in George Stevens’ 1956 film Giant, starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean. Founders Al Micallef and Mike Evans chose the name when they opened the first Reata in Alpine, Texas in 1995.
What happened to the original Fort Worth Reata?
Reata opened on the 35th floor of the Bank One Tower in 1996. An F3 tornado struck downtown Fort Worth on March 28, 2000 and devastated the building. Reata reopened in the same tower just 42 days later, but closed again in January 2001 and spent the next 22 years at Sundance Square before moving back to the same building’s ground floor at 530 Throckmorton St in July 2024.
How much does dinner cost at Reata?
Dinner salads start at $12, non-steak mains range from $23 to $37, sides are $10–$12 and desserts $11–$12. Redfish is $33, pepper-crusted tenderloin $54, blackened buffalo ribeye $67 and the 20oz Cowboy Bone-In Ribeye $85. The charbroiled ribeye has a 14oz minimum at $3.95 per ounce, totaling at least $55.30 before tax and tip.
What is Reata’s signature dish?
The Jalapeño Cilantro Crusted Texas Red Fish ($33), Tenderloin Tamales with Pecan Mash ($18) and 20oz Cowboy Bone-In Ribeye ($85) are signature choices. Compare the redfish with the $31 grilled salmon if you want seafood rather than steak.
What’s the difference between the two ribeyes?
The $85 Cowboy is a 20oz bone-in beef ribeye. The $67 blackened buffalo ribeye is bison. A third listing, charbroiled beef ribeye, costs $3.95 per ounce with a 14oz minimum. Compare the meat, preparation and weight before ordering.
Are there vegetarian or seafood options?
Martha’s Vegetable Plate is $24; ask about the current vegetables and preparation. Seafood mains include redfish at $33 and grilled salmon at $31. Some seafood starters include bacon, so read the whole dish rather than choosing by its name alone.
What are Reata’s hours?
Lunch runs daily 11 a.m.–2:30 p.m.; weekend brunch is Saturday and Sunday in that same window. Dinner is 5–9 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and 5–10 p.m. Friday–Saturday. Call about holiday changes.
Does Reata take reservations?
Yes, and they’re recommended for dinner. Book through OpenTable via reata.net or call (817) 336-1009. Private dining is also available for groups and events — contact the restaurant directly.
