Keller’s Drive-In Menu — Dallas’ Classic Carhop Burger Joint

A drive-in frozen in time: pull under the carport, order the No. 5 on a poppy-seed bun from a carhop at your window, wash it down with a cold beer in your car, and pay in cash. Open since the 1950s, and barely changed since.

The story

A carhop drive-in that never got the memo to change

Keller’s is the kind of place that shouldn’t still exist — and thank goodness it does. Jack Keller opened his first Dallas drive-in around 1950, and the beloved Northwest Highway location dates to 1965, back when carhops and cold beer in the car were just how burgers got sold. He’d learned the trade at Kirby’s Pig Stand, the Dallas chain often credited as the nation’s very first drive-in. Keller took the idea, added his own pizzazz, and never looked back.

Seventy-odd years later, almost nothing has changed. You pull your car under a carport, a carhop comes to your window, and your food arrives on a tray hung on the door. The menu is still bolted to a wall beside the order window — six burgers, a couple of dogs, fries, tots, onion rings, shakes. It’s cash only, the prices look like a misprint from another decade, and the poppy-seed buns are a genuine Keller’s signature you won’t find on many other burgers.

The other thing that sets Keller’s apart: you can drink a beer in your car. The vintage green-and-yellow “Keller’s Hamburgers Beer” sign isn’t nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake — order a longneck with your food or grab a case to go. It’s earned a national following, a spot on the burger-TV circuit, and a reputation as one of America’s last great drive-ins. Below is what to order, a quick tool to figure out how much cash to bring, the full menu, and how the whole carhop ritual works.

Part of the draw is who you’re parked next to. On weekends the lot fills with classic cars and leather-clad bikers sharing carports with shiny new SUVs and kid-packed sedans, a jukebox playing in the background and carhops who’ve worked there for decades. Foodies detour off the highway on their way through Texas just to eat a burger in the car the way people did in 1965. It isn’t gourmet and it isn’t trying to be — the whole appeal is that Keller’s found something that worked and simply never stopped doing it.

Get the No. 5 Special

The most-ordered item, and it’s not close

The No. 5 is two thin, griddled patties with a single slice of cheese holding it together, lettuce, tomato, and a Thousand Island–style special sauce, on a soft, poppy-seed bun — with grilled onions free for the asking. Regulars swear the seeded bun is the secret: it soaks up the juices without going soggy, so every bite holds together to the last edge.

Round it out the classic way: add tater tots or the well-loved onion rings, a hand-spun shake, and—if you’re parked and staying a while—a cold beer. It’s hard to spend more than ten dollars.

Keller’s selling beer to the car is part of its whole identity — “just a place to sell beers and some burgers,” as Jack Keller put it.

Prices are a recent snapshot from public listings and reviews, not an official price board — Keller’s has no website, so treat these as a guide and expect small changes over time and between locations. Items marked “see board” are served but without a confirmed price here.

How the drive-in works

Keller’s is a true drive-in, not a drive-through. Here’s the whole ritual so you look like a regular.

1

Pull under the carport

Drive in and park under one of the covered stalls. Don’t get out of your car — this is the whole point.

2

Order at your window

A carhop comes to your car and takes your order (these days on an iPad). The menu is posted on the wall by the walk-up window if you want to read it first.

3

Pay cash

There are no card readers. Bring bills — use the calculator above if you want a number before you go.

4

Eat in the car

Food comes out fast and gets set on your window or a tray. Have a beer with it if you like, tip your carhop, and enjoy a slice of 1965.
