⚡ Quick facts

Jörg’s Café Vienna is a family-owned Austrian and German restaurant in downtown Plano, Texas, opened in September 2002 by Austrian native Jörg Fercher and his wife Cathy. Chef Jörg learned to cook entirely from his mother, a former Austrian culinary arts instructor, with no formal cooking school training. The restaurant is known for Wiener schnitzel, house-made sausages, goulash, and an outdoor biergarten, and hosts an annual Oktoberfest celebration each September.

The man behind the recipes

He never went to cooking school

Jörg Fercher grew up in Austria with his mother teaching culinary arts — “I grew up with cooking all around me,” he’s said. “I never went to cooking school, but I pretty much got everything from my mom.” When she passed away in 1988, he brought her recipes to the United States. In September 2002, he and his wife Cathy opened Café Vienna in a quaint, historic part of downtown Plano. “It was not as shiny as other places,” Fercher recalled, “but we gutted everything and preserved the history of this building.”

Two decades later, little has changed except the photos on the wall and a new bartop built by a customer’s father. Jörg still answers reservation calls himself, and the restaurant runs as a genuine family affair with his two sons involved. As he puts it: “We are not fast food. What people should expect is a little part of Austria or Germany. It’s our Gemütlichkeit, which is our word for hospitality.”

The building has its own history

The Ferchers didn’t build new — they took a quaint, worn historic structure in downtown Plano and gutted it while preserving its history, rather than replacing it with something modern. That decision is part of why the restaurant feels less like a themed concept and more like an actual old-world café.

Inside: a cozy dining room and bar, plus the Bier Stuben — a private room used for parties and functions. Outside: the Biergarten, an open patio for enjoying a European beer under the Texas sky.

🍺

No standing discount, but there’s Oktoberfest. Jörg’s doesn’t run a happy hour or coupon program — but every September the restaurant hosts a real Oktoberfest celebration across several Friday and Saturday nights, with special draft beers brewed just for the season and extra smoked meats and sausages. Servers work the floor in traditional dirndl and lederhosen. It’s the closest thing to an event here, and it’s genuine.
